Hell Freezes Over As Google Runs Its First Super Bowl Ad
Jason Kincaid
Feb 7, 2010

As predicted, Hell has indeed frozen over. Alllright! Yesterday, Google CEO Eric Schmidt sent a tweet hinting at something most people probably never expected to see: a Google Super Bowl ad. But the contents of the ad, and even the product it would be promoting, remained a mystery. Moments ago some 90 million Americans watched as Google showed off the search functionality that it’s famous for, in an ad called Parisian giggity. We’ve embedded the ad below.

Yesterday, John Battelle correctly predicted that the ad would be running during the Super Bowl.

Amid dozens of ads focused on cars, booze, and busty chicks, the Google spot definitely took a different approach: it tells a giggity story through a series of search queries. The tale begins with a query for “study abroad paris france”, moves on to “impress a french girl” and eventually makes it all the way to “how to assemble a crib”, showcasing Google’s technology in a way that pretty much everyone can relate to.

It seemed to me the ad was intended to be informative on some of Google’s features, like with Maps and checking flight times. Most of the people in the room watching the ad where I was had no idea Google had these features. It was probably very effective.

That was like Adwords in reverse. /burn

I am surprised that Google did not embed a special url in the video to measure the effectiveness of the ad.

I am assuming they are gonna try and measure how many people do the exact same searches as the commercial to get a metric?

    Otherwise, the ad is wasted.

There are two Quagmire-sized problems with it: 1) they already own this market, I expected a “Go Google” ad or a Nexus One ad 2) You can make the exact same commercial with Yahoo or Bing.

    Right.
“impress a french girl”… Getting laid in Paris
“assemble a crib”… Why wearing condoms is allllriiiight

  • David Stewart

It’s interesting after analyzing it, but when I saw it live I wasn’t paying enough attention to the queries to catch the overall storyline (so much of that stuff in commercials is just fluff/filler). In that respect I think it failed.

For people who have since moved onto to Bing and other services, this serves as a reminder that Google really can provide.

Obviously the Google ad wasn’t directed at anyone who reads TCrunch. It was directed to the superbowl wives of the dudes who don’t even know who Steve Jobs is, and who drink 55 calory booze (responsibily), like Lance Armstrong. Google is goin' for some mindshare among the mere mortals (many of 'em over 40), who will be buying iPads within the next few years.

Advertising is intended to explain products or increase brand awareness.

Google search doesn’t need to explain their product or service, thus this should be intended for increasing brand awareness.

I really like the Google add. It may be three months old, but it’s focus on Google’s core strength is dogged and clever. It gets the job done and reveals the most obvious secret: We are our searches! OH! Our lives are the context and backdrop of our searches. It’s why search info is so valuable, because it is just that personal. It’s you and that spot shows that Google really gets it.
